Pak PM Shehbaz stresses collective action for cohesive SCO Region at 2024 Summit

ISLAMABAD – Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif  called for enhanced collaboration among member states as he opened 23rd summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Council of Heads of Government.

Sharif, 73, termed organization a beacon of multilateralism in his opening remarks, that saw leaders from member states including China, India, Russia, Pakistan, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, and Belarus, along with 16 other countries participating as observers or dialogue partners.

In his address, Prime Minister emphasized that the international organization represents the collective voice of over 40pc of the global population, rooted in the “Shanghai spirit.” He welcomed attendees to Islamabad, praising the event as a testament to the strong ties and collaboration among diverse nations.

The premier urged the leaders to utilize the platform to exchange ideas, share best practices, and develop concrete action plans that could enhance regional cooperation, security, and sustainable development.

“We have the potential to drive socio-economic progress, enhance regional peace and stability, and improve the quality of life for our citizens,” PM Shehbaz stated.

Prime Minister underscored the importance of unity in addressing shared challenges, noting the current historic period of global transition affecting various social, political, economic, and security landscapes.

Calling for a collective effort, he reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to regional peace, stability, and development, highlighting the need for collaboration in areas such as education, tourism, poverty alleviation, and the empowerment of women and youth across the SCO region.

As discussions progress, leaders are expected to focus on fostering closer ties and exploring opportunities for mutual benefit, with hopes for significant outcomes that align with the aspirations of all member states.
