UK snow forecast warns of -9C freeze, wintry showers

New weather maps indicate parts of the UK could see a festive dusting of snow in the Christmas week, with a period of wintry weather forecast from December 17 to 19.

As per the MetDesk models, Scotland is forecasted for unsettled conditions, with snow predicted from the far north down to West Dunbartonshire.

In England, comparatively lighter snow showers are expected with 1mm snow per hour that are possible for areas including Manchester, Stoke-on-Trent, and Birmingham.

The cold snap will bring plunging temperatures. It is expected that the parts of Scottish Highlands could drop to as low as -9°C on December 19, while the North West of England may see lows of -4°C.

The Met Office’s official longer-range forecast for December 10-19 shows low pressure will dominate, bringing rain and strong winds, with snow “probably confined to high ground in the north.”

For the exact Christmas week (December 20-January 2) the forecast indicates that the weather is “likely to be changeable,” with “hill snow also a possibility, mainly in the north.”
