Trump Imposes 25% Tariff on India, Effective August 1

Washington – Former U.S. President Donald Trump has announced a 25% tariff on Indian imports, set to take effect from August 1, 2025. The move is aimed at reducing the United States’ growing trade deficit and correcting what Trump described as decades of unfair trade practices by India.

In a post on his social media platform Truth Social, Trump said that while India is considered a friend, it has imposed some of the world’s highest tariffs and strict non-financial trade barriers, which have negatively impacted American industry and economy.

Trump also pointed out India’s continued defense ties with Russia, claiming that New Delhi remains one of the largest importers of Russian energy and military equipment — often in coordination with China — despite global pressure on Moscow over the Ukraine war.

The former president warned that, in addition to the 25% import duty, India could face further financial penalties due to its trade relationship with Russia.

While Trump made the announcement via social media, the White House has not yet released an official statement or clarification regarding the potential penalties.

Analysts say the decision could strain U.S.–India trade and diplomatic relations, and may pose a new challenge for Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, particularly in maintaining his global image as a successful statesman.
