Emirates A380 diverts to Frankfurt after mid-air medical emergency: See full details

An Emirates Airbus A380 flying from Dubai to London Heathrow declared a mid-air emergency and diverted to Frankfurt Airport on Thursday, October 1, 2026.

Flight EK31, operated by a 500-plus-seat Airbus A380-800 (registration A6-EDX), departed Dubai International Airport at 7:30 UTC for its scheduled seven-hour, 20-minute journey to London.

Around six hours into the flight, while cruising at 40,000 ft over European airspace, the crew transmitted transponder code Squawk 7700, the international signal for a general emergency.

The double-decker aircraft then began a rapid descent from cruising altitude and requested a diversion to Frankfurt (FRA). Emirates later confirmed the diversion was due to a medical emergency involving a passenger on board.

An airline spokesperson said: “Our cabin crew provided assistance during the flight, and medical support was arranged on arrival. The aircraft landed safely in Frankfurt, where the passenger disembarked to receive further medical attention.”

The tracking updates confirmed that the A380 touched down on runway 25L at 16:09 local time, and the flight from Frankfurt to London Heathrow was moved to 18:00 local time. Emirates said it was rebooking affected connecting flights and would send updated itineraries to passengers.

The spokesperson said: “We apologise to customers for the delay. The health and safety of our passengers and crew is always our highest priority.”

The incident is the latest in a series of in-flight emergencies involving European airspace in recent days, including a British Airways flight to Heathrow that diverted to Luxembourg and a Lufthansa flight to Toronto that declared an emergency over Manchester.
