Berlin: The German Parliament expressed no confidence in Chancellor Olaf Schulz.
According to foreign news agencies, the German parliament has approved Chancellor Olaf Schulz’s request for a vote of no confidence in him and his government, paving the way for early elections on February 23.
Germany’s three-party coalition government collapsed last month when the Free Democrats left the coalition over debt, leaving Olaf Schulz and his Social Democrats and Greens with a majority in parliament.
Under the German constitution, President Frank-Walter Steinmeier can only dissolve parliament and call an election if the chancellor calls for a vote of confidence and the parliament does not express confidence in him.
According to the foreign news agency, 394 of the 733 members of the German parliament expressed no confidence in the chancellor.
