Shibli Faraz, Omar Ayub Among 108 Convicted in May 9 Protest Case

FAISALABAD –

An anti-terrorism court (ATC) in Faisalabad has convicted 108 individuals, including prominent Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leaders Shibli Faraz and Omar Ayub, in connection with the May 9 riots that erupted after the arrest of former Prime Minister Imran Khan.

The case was registered under FIR No. 832 at Civil Lines Police Station, involving a total of 185 accused. During the hearing, the court announced convictions for 108 suspects, handing out various jail terms. The remaining 77 individuals were acquitted due to lack of evidence or legal merit.

The May 9, 2023 protests led to widespread unrest and damage to public property, including attacks on sensitive installations. The government and law enforcement agencies launched a nationwide crackdown on those allegedly involved.

Among those sentenced, several are known political figures, adding significance to the judgment. Meanwhile, others including Zain Qureshi and Fawad Chaudhry were acquitted of all charges.
